Schulich Leader Scholarship Recipient

River East Transcona School Division is proud to share that Cherry Wang, a standout student from Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate, has been awarded the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship to study at the University of Waterloo this fall. She is one of only 100 students selected from over 350,000 graduating high school students across Canada to receive this nationally competitive award, valued at up to $120,000.

A driven innovator, mentor, and community leader, Cherry has excelled across a wide range of academic and extracurricular pursuits. She leads her school’s robotics, hackathon, and coding clubs, helps students build programming skills through Solve with Code and the Canadian Coding League, and develops tech-based solutions to real-world problems. As a volunteer, she has supported underserved youth, led community safety patrols, and created assistive tech for children with disabilities.

Cherry also served as a Shad Canada ambassador after completing the selective STEAM enrichment program at the University of Waterloo and is developing an AI-powered productivity app. Her deep commitment to innovation and social impact is matched by her resilience—raised by a single mother facing financial challenges, Cherry has overcome barriers with determination and purpose.

“This scholarship means everything,” Cherry said. “It lifts a huge burden from my family and gives me the freedom to focus on learning, building, and giving back.”

Samantha Adamson, one of Cherry’s teachers at Miles Macdonell, reflected on her impact.

“Cherry is one of the most hardworking, intelligent, and supportive students I’ve had the privilege of teaching," Adamson said. "Her natural leadership and compassion will leave a lasting mark on her peers and the entire Miles Mac community.”

Cherry’s goal is to pursue a master’s degree at MIT and become a computer hardware engineer at Google, while continuing to launch start-ups that turn bold ideas into practical solutions. With the Schulich Leader Scholarship behind her, she is well on her way to building a future defined by innovation, empathy, and impact.
